For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

When we feel weighed down, Jesus does not begin with advice. He begins with an invitation: come. That may sound simple, but it changes the way we think about rest. Many of us treat rest as something we earn after we have finished enough, solved enough, or finally gotten ourselves together. We imagine that once the work is done, the house is in order, the conflict is resolved, and our responsibilities are under control, then we will be allowed to rest.

Jesus offers something different. He does not say, “Come to me after you have recovered.” He does not say, “Come when your faith is stronger,” or “Come when you have stopped making the same mistakes.” He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened.” Weariness is not a disqualification. It is part of the invitation.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1010/3534/4243/files/rest-for-the-weary-learning-jesus-rest-rhythm-cover-2000x3200.jpg?v=1785709708
